Going Solo

Guess which happy girl just booked her very first solo trip?

ME!

I'm not quite sure how I feel about it - excited, worried, happy, chickened out. I've been thinking about solo-travelling for the longest time, 6 months? To do it, to do it not. Woke up yesterday morning and the first thought that came into my mind was, STOP PROCRASTINATING, ANNA! So I did it - I booked my flights to 3 different countries (feels so good to be booking one-way tickets but unfortunately the last one is back to Singapore). Still, it feels good to finally plucked up the courage to do so.

I'll be laying my foot in Mongolia, Beijing and Hong Kong. Of these three, I've only been to Hong Kong hence there's so much to look forward to! Especially Mongolia, I must say. For several reasons like:


  1. It's the coldest capital in the world (Ulaanbaatar) - during the period I'm in, it's the coldest winter month which temperature can drop to -40° 
  2. Very different from the metropolitan cities I would usually opt for.
  3. A whole new different culture where Camels are mode of transportation, vegetable and rice aren't part of their local meal (yay to all the meat!)
  4. Being polite is part of their culture while thank you(s) isn't.
  5. Staying in a hostel dorm instead of hotels or bed and breakfast :/ 
  6. Lastly, the Mongolian ger also known as yurt. Totally see myself in one of these.

There's so much to plan and SO MANY TO PREPARE! I've found a few activities which I might be trying when I'm there - dog sledding (must), to attend the snow and ice festival, stay in the Mongolian ger, spend a day with the nomadic family, camel rides!

As many would know, most of my trip comes with a very tight budget (I find satisfaction spending way lesser than others would expect) hence for this trip to 3 countries, after spending $1450 on flights and accommodation, I'm targeting to spend $2000 altogether for this trip. That gives me approximately $550 for 10 days. Not quite sure if shopping beforehand counts as I bought a lot of winter clothing for Mongolia. 

For Beijing and Hong Kong, I'm leaving it to God's will to bring me where I should be..

Just kidding, I'm visiting the Great Wall of China, Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum and Tiananmen Square. I think these 3 would be my priorities for Beijing, for now. And come to think about it, I actually have nothing planned for Hong Kong except shopping. Subconsciously I've booked my hotel next to the biggest mall, so I assuming subconsciously I've planned to shop in Hong Kong. 

Excited girl is excited! Shall keep this globetrotter diary till then :)
