China At It's Best - 大理, 丽江 & 香格里拉
Oh, hello there :)
I just came back from my annual family trip. This year, it's China again! Again for them, I didn't tag along last year as I went Europe. Anywayyyys, we went to Yun-Nan Province, and in Yun-Nan Province, we visited 大理, 丽江 & 香格里拉 which you probably already knew from the title of this post. Keeping the post short, there will be more pictures and captions to them :D
大理
This was in Dali Old Town!
I had a better picture of this, but let's stick to this first.
Lake gull, I assume.
Feeding the
Sunset caught.
There isn't much to see in 大理, neither is there much to do in 大理. The fun part of 大理 was feeding the birds, which lasted for 45 minutes. I suggest that whoever is planning to go Yun-Nan, you may now skip 大理.
丽江 There is so much to eat, buy and do in 丽江. Among the 3 places we been to, 丽江 was the best. Here's the variety of food in the small little old town.
Part of me dread trying their local specialties which I can't find in Singapore. Well, you never know if they mix dog meat in beef or recycled sewage to cooking oil. That's for things to eat.
Oh wait, here's some grapes which he end up dropping.
Things to buy in 丽江 - I don't exactly have a picture, but in the picture below, the red ski coat was bought in China as it was getting really cold and I did not prepare enough coats. It's an imitation of Jack Wolfskin's ski coat, and they sold it at RMB300 (Around SGD60). I must say it's a really good buy, but I found some other stores that sold it at RMB150 and then another at RMB100. Prft.
Oh that's me, on a young horse.
Things to see in 丽江 - Not that I can recall the exact name of the place, but we went 玉龙雪山 (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain). Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Consisting of 13 peaks, among which Shanzidou is the highest with an altitude of 5,600 meters (18,360 feet), the mountain stretches a length of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a width of 20 kilometers (13 miles). Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers (nine miles) away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence the name.
The views you can see from the bottom, to the top of the mountain.
And that's my lovely grandma munching on sweet corn.
香格里拉
It's THE coldest. I must say, it's even colder than Iceland and I'm not kidding. According to the driver, 香格里拉 is for the Gods to stay (because it's that cold) and according to the citizens living on the mountain, the coldest it has ever been was -27°C and the hottest it has ever been was 10°C. HOTTEST, 10°C. Singapore, you got to snow someday.
When we were there, day and night, it's around -8°C. I had 5 layers of clothes on - 2 layer of thermals, 2 layer of turtlenecks, and the ski coat.
And the best part was, we went hiking even when it was that cold.
It was 4500ft above sea level and around -20°C when we were right at the top. Honestly, I did not want to go any any further, BUT I needed to. I remember in Iceland, I spend most of the time in the room or in the car because I wanted to avoid the cold. I regretted. I came back wondering why didn't I spend more time taking pictures and enjoy the cold before I come back to the oven.
So I did, in China. This is 石卡雪山 (Shika Snow Mountain). All the snow has settled for quite awhile and froze up already, so we created our own snow.
